| in this weekend's issue of The Washington Post Magazine, there was an article on the rising popularity of soccer with today's youth. my favorite line in the article was this:
"[Soccer] is not merely a game, but rather "the game" - so deeply ingrained in the fabric of everyday life... that it is, in many ways, the primary instrument of socialization for young children. How the game is played in one corner of the globe or another is seen as a manifestation of national character and identity everywhere else. And in learning how to play, children internalize the traits that are valued in their society... Soccer [is] a way of life... the one perfect metaphor for everything."
i found that description of soccer to be very pretty. |
